Not All Heroes Wear Capes

In the age of the Superhero movie, it's a monumental task to take on telling a story in any of the universes that have been created. It's an even bigger task when you decide that the story you're going to tell isn't about a Superhero at all. That didn't scare Epix one bit. Pennyworth is the tale of Alfred Pennyworth, who one day would become butler to the Wayne Family. But before he was the Caped Crusader's right hand man, he had some larger than life adventures of his own. As the series was gearing up to launch, Epix hit up McM to lend an ear to the promotional material.

The story takes place in London, but in a world much different than the one we all know. The London that is depicted in the series is a darker, far more dangerous version of the city. A series of behind the scenes vignettes were filmed to explore the universe and characters that show runner Bruno Heller (who also is responsible for the Gotham series) envisioned.

The show launched with great success. We were lucky enough to be invited to a private screening of the first episode, and it did not disappoint. The 10 episode series ran weekly (remember when you needed to wait a week to see the next episode?), so we started work on the episodics. The format for each spot was fairly similar, so McM's JD McMillin created some super suspenseful and dark sound design to accompany the first tease that was then used throughout the campaign. Below is the series finale tease, so beware of spoilers ahead!

"Being involved with a campaign from start to finish is one of the more rewarding projects you can work on. You tend to get emotionally involved with the story and characters, and it inspires you to do great work." says JD who is no stranger to these types of projects. "Creating the soundscape for this promo series was killer fun, and I am very proud to be a part of the Pennyworth family."

If you haven't already, go check out the series on'll be glad you did!
